A complete academic writing environment with a verifiable record of how it was written

Ekdotico is a browser-based platform designed for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers. One workspace brings together every writing tool needed from initial research to final export. Every sealed export carries a reference to the signed record of how it was written.

The platform

One tab. Every tool.

Ekdotico is in pre-launch development. This page describes the product as designed; nothing on it is a claim about a running service.

Ekdotico brings together a collaborative block editor with academic templates, a planning canvas for structuring arguments, a research workspace with source chat, a citation engine, a PDF reader, a bibliography manager that formats references in five citation styles, an AI-maintained research journal, and a task tracker.

The platform will be released as open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence. The Student Plan will be free, with Individual Pro as its paid counterpart. Institutional access will be offered through a Team Plan designed for research supervisors and academic departments.

The provenance system

The provenance record

Every writing session generates an event log of keystrokes, paste events, source consultations, and AI invocations. The log is recorded as a factual account of how the document was written. The record collects five categories of signal: session chronology and active writing time, revision operations, source engagement, disclosed AI tool usage, and the cryptographic chain that binds them. Each session is signed with an Ed25519 signature as it closes, and a sealed export carries a provenance reference in its metadata: the document identifier, the document hash, and the verification address.

The record describes the process; it does not score the writing. It does not classify a document as AI-written or human-written, and it computes no measure of how much of the text came from where. Ekdotico produces no AI detector score at any point, and that is a permanent design position rather than a feature still to come: the published evidence on detectors records unverifiable outputs and systematic false positives against non-native English writers (Liang et al., 2023).

The provenance record is the student's document. On the Student Plan, it stays private until the student chooses to share it. On the Team Plan, supervisors receive read access to records created under the institution, on the consent the student gives at enrolment.

Verification

Public, accountless verification

Every sealed export includes a reference to the public verification endpoint. A supervisor, a journal editor, or a reviewer can retrieve the provenance report without an account, without an institutional agreement, and without contacting the student.

The verification view presents three panels: the document text in read-only form, the provenance report with its signature chain, and a video playback panel, which in version 1.0 states that playback is not yet available. Reconstruction of the writing session from the event log is planned for version 1.1. The event log that will support it is stored from the moment a document is created.

The team

Who is building Ekdotico

Ekdotico is in pre-launch development, by two undergraduate students of the American College of Greece. It is in its pre-build documentation phase; application development begins once the full specification is complete.
